Five AMC leaders in governance, board development, and DEI will be sharing their expertise this August at the ASAE Annual Meeting, August 20-23, 2022.
- August 20: Wendy-Jo Toyama, MBA CAE FASAE, will outline next steps for organizations to take in their DEI journey when she co-presents the session “Navigating Your Organization’s DEI Journey.”
- August 22: Dave Bergeson, PhD CAE, and Mark Engle, DM CAE FASAE, will share strategies and case studies on how to minimize the influence of past leaders when making change decisions at the board table in their session “Overcoming the (un)Due Influence of Past Distinguished Leaders.”
- August 23: Amy Sherwood, CAE, will share insights on how to support DEI initiatives in the session “Models to Enhance DEI within Your Association: Health-Focused Association’s Perspectives.”
- Steve Smith, MS CAE FAAMSE, and Wendy-Jo Toyama, MBA CAE FASAE, will share 5 approaches to effective allyship of black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) colleagues when they co-present “Five Ways to Become a Better BIPOC Ally.”
About the Speakers
Dave Bergeson, PhD CAE, has more than 20 years of expertise in association management, board management, and association governance. Dave honed his skills first as an executive director before becoming Vice President of Client Relations, a role in which he focuses on ensuring our partners continue to grow, prosper, and are well-served. Outside of AMC, Dave is active in professional organizations, including having served as Chair of Association Forum of Chicagoland and holding various roles with the American Society of Association Executives.
Mark Engle, DM, CAE FASAE, is a principal of AMC who specializes in board governance and strategy. A frequent author and speaker on governance, board development, and high performing organizations, Mark regularly develops new research that leads to advancement in the nonprofit management profession. Each year, he works closely with dozens of nonprofit organizations on a variety of governance issues, from single board development presentations to more detailed board and committee restructuring projects.
Amy Sherwood, CAE, is an executive director with more than 15 years of experience in operations, strategy, and board relations. Active in the Association community, she is an ASAE Leadership Academy graduate, an Association Forum CAE Study Course Facilitator, and ASAE Healthcare Community Advisory Committee member. She has also been recognized for her many achievements with a Forty Under 40 Award and the 2022 Inspiring Leaders Award from Association Forum.
Steve Smith, MS CAE FAAMSE, is CEO of AMC. He is a frequent speaker and writer on topics related to leadership, association strategy, and DEI. He has also served in numerous volunteer leadership roles with ASAE, AMC Institute (AMCI), Association Forum of Chicagoland, and American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE). He is past president of AAMSE and current co-chair of their Diversity Advisory Group, and the immediate past chair of Association Forum’s Welcoming Environments Committee. He also participates in CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, a coalition of over 2,000 CEOs who are dedicated to creating inclusive organizations and collaborating on leading practices.
Wendy-Jo Toyama, MBA CAE FASAE, has more than 25 years of association management experience, serving in numerous executive director and senior leadership roles for healthcare-focused associations. An active volunteer, Wendy is a member of the ASAE Research Foundation Research Committee, past chair for the ASAE Diversity + Inclusion Committee, and secretary for the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care. She is well-known and sought out for her expertise, commitment, and drive to innovate positive change and growth in the association community.
